This is Iaine at exactly 2 months and 3 weeks.
I am so in love with this little person. ♥

Five Times the Magic

Yesterday was exceptionally.. well.. exceptional! Fantastic, extreme, unbelievable, every GREAT adjective you can think of.

Iaine killed 5 birds in one stone. FIVE!! She had 5 firsts yesterday and to say that the day went great is an understatement.

Morning:
Her 1st time to actually *use* a 2-piece bathing suit, and not just for pictorial purposes!

Iaine has 3 pairs of 2-piece swim suits and yesterday she got to actually use the newest one. She was sitting on her netted throne (the one she uses during bath time) in her... (drumroll please)

Brand new inflatable pool! It was also her 1st time to go swimming and she had a blast! Only smiles and laughter here, people. She really liked kicking the water (which made her slide all down the net sometimes) haha! My MIL, 2 SILs, my husband, and even the househelp were also there and we just went crazy about her. Too cute!

After the swimming galore I gave her a real bath and then MIL rocked her to sleep. She seemed to have passed out after a few minutes. Swimming is exhausting after all.

.
.
.
.
Afternoon:
Later that day, Jai and I took our little Ckeeky to SM (the most popular mall in town) to see a local actress. Her name is Andi Eigenmann and she's the star of a popular TV show Agua Bendita. No matter how deep her sleep is, Iaine just WAKES UP when it's time for Agua Bendita. I know, puzzles us too.

It's not really our thing to meet local actors but for Iaine we'll do anything. So we tagged Iaine along who napped so comfortably in her Super Awesome Magic Spaceship by the way (Jai has coined that name for his daughter's Looney Tunes stroller). Because we had no idea what time Andi will be coming we got there too early and had to wait for 3 hours until the show started. I even asked my sister and cousin join us just so we can have some company.

After having laughs and chats over Starbucks frappuccinos we went back to the mall area to wait for Andi ('twas Iaine's 1st time at Starbucks by the way). We had a hard time trying to get Andi take a picture with us, but because both Jai and Iaine have excellent charm we made our way through the crowd and got what we came there for.

That's her on the right. Pretty, I know.
.
.
.
.
Evening:
I thought all of Iaine's magic had been used up by the end of the day but I was terribly, terribly wrong. There is absolutely NO WAY that Iaine is just some other kid. I tell you, that child is a wonderbaby. Because last night...

SHE ROLLED OVER FOR THE FIRST TIME!

At 2 months 2 weeks and 5 days old, my own kid, my girl, my baby, my amazing little Iaine rolled over from her back to her tummy all be herself. My husband and I are so proud of this new achievement! Although we're kind of unfortunate to not have witness this feat.

Nope, we didn't see how Iaine did it. Jai left her on the bed before he went downstairs to the bathroom and she was still on her back. My back was facing Iaine because I was at the desk checking for comments on my Facebook after I was done uploading new photos of her. Sure enough, I didn't even have the slightest peripheral vision at what was going on behind me. When Jai came back he specifically asked me, "Jeean idinapa mo ga si Iaine?" (Jeean, did you put Iaine on her tummy?) And I said no.

And then I saw it--Iaine WAS ON HER TUMMY! We were so shocked and just stood there for a couple of seconds before we snapped out of it and turned Iaine on her back again. After a few minutes talking about it in utter amazement, Jai realized we didn't even take a picture of it. I LOLed. That would have been precious, but hey, when you see your baby's face buried in the sheets and seems to be struggling, you just don't think about taking a picture.

I believe that my baby has magical powers. Ok, kidding. But what an amazing little girl. Life as a parent sure is hard, but I can also say that it's a thousand times more rewarding.

I'm gonna end this post with a thought:
"Nothing bad about being second. But the firsts are always remembered."

Ahh, I can't wait for more of those. =)

Hello Iaine

As I was writing my previous blog entry last night I was so caught up in it that I lost track of time. I turned around and saw my two loves fast asleep already. I took the opportunity to marvel at how much they look alike for about 30 seconds and then crawled next to Jai (literally because Iaine wakes up at the faintest creak of the bed) and whispered in his ear if he's gonna get up later to use the laptop. He didn't open his eyes and just lightly shook his head. He's really knocked out, I thought. I gave him little kisses on the back and carefully made my way back to the desk so not to disturb my darlings.

Usually it's Jai who stays up late watching movies but last night I guess he was just too tired and just drifted off to sleep beside our little Cheeky.

After I was done with my entry I crawled back into bed and positioned myself between my two favorite people in the world. But I still wasn't sleepy yet. I reached for my phone and surfed the net some more. I think I even made several tweets too. After what seemed like an hour I finally felt my eyelids get heavier... and finally fell asleep.

And then it happened. It happened again. IT is the worst thing that ever happens to me. IT is unstoppable, IT just happens. IT gives no warning that IT's coming to take over me. IT is evil.

IT's an allergy attack.

I have allergic rhinitis. I inherited it from my mom. It runs in the family and almost all my aunts and uncles have it too. We all have the same case. We're allergic to dust. Well dust is everywhere so it doesn't come as a surprise that an allergy attack is a normal part of our day.

What happened recently was exceptionally bad because aside from having an itchy soft palate and an even itchier eustachian tube (my two main signs that an allergy attack has started)... I was having trouble breathing. Sure enough my insides were too inflamed already. I tried to ignore it for a while but I just couldn't go back to sleep so I went downstairs to get a glass of water and took an antihistamine tab (I've always self medicated with Cetirizine). Gulped it down and went back upstairs. I immediately I felt better probably because of the water, but after about 30 minutes I just dozed off without even trying.

And then Iaine's cry woke me up. I saw that it was bright outside and figured it was only around 7am so I let Jai handle the situation. I just needed to sleep some more. Not because I'm a lazy ass mom, but the medicine just keeps me sleepy.

I woke up around 11am and heard Iaine crying again. When you have an infant co-sleeping just inches away from you, you really have no choice but to open your eyes when she decides that crying is not enough. She takes it up a notch and starts to shriek. Ear piercing cries that shoots daggers into your ears. I wasn't ready to get up yet because I was still under the drowsy spell of the Virlix, but Jai wasn't budging so me and my straggly hair, drowsy eyes, and weak muscles dragged myself out of bed to get the day started.

I realized that the allergy was gone but unfortunately everything in this world just has to have a price--I felt more sleep deprived than ever. EVER. You can't imagine how horrible that feels.

But as they say, there's always a silver lining. The situation took a good turn when Jai broke some very good news to me: Iaine had her first ever phone conversation this morning! Immediately the world seemed like a better place even in my exaggeratedly sleep deprived state.

It happened while I was in deep slumber and Jai was on baby duty. My FIL called my MIL on her cell phone and they let FIL talk to Iaine. I was told that Iaine was responding so well, it was as if she was really talking. It's just too bad I didn't get to see it for myself, but hearing about it makes me proud of my little girl all the same.

Pretty soon she's not gonna be so little anymore and she'd be like, "WTF mom stop checkin up on me, I'm with my friends!" But until that happens, she's still my wonderful amazing little Iainezy fairy. She will always, always surprise everyone with her intelligence and sophisticated beauty.

Ugh. Damn you, allergies. Ruined a perfect little moment.

Searching for the Happiest Nappy

As mothers we tend to be overpotective over our little ones and we try to keep them happy as much as possible. We make sure they're well fed, comfortable in their clothes, and most importantly, dry. You know what I'm talking about, ladies. Let's talk diaper business!

I've tried a few brands on Iaine that are popular in the market here in the Philippines and here's my lowdown on what they have to offer our little ones... and our pockets!

Huggies - Iaine's very first diapers, Newborn.

Look: Boxy. Very colorful and cute.

Quality: I've only used the Newborn size on Iaine and all I can say is that they bunch up when wet and they don't fit quite right.

Verdict: Don't let the price fool you into thinking they're quality diapers.

Mamy Poko - Someone else bought them for Iaine. 2 huge Newborn packs and Iaine used up all of them!

Look: Very cute. Winne the Pooh, anyone?

Quality: Mamy Poko is a brand that's not very popular (maybe because it has limited distribution, I don't know), but it surprised me with good quality. It never leaked and Iaine never had any skin irritation. I have no idea how much it's worth but whatever it is, it's worth the price.

Verdict: A good choice.

EQ Dry Diapers - Someone else also bought them for my baby. She only got to use them for a week, Small size.

Look: In fairness, the diaper looks cute and simple. At first glance, it doesn't look like a diaper at all when worn.

Quality: Made of thin, translucent material. The padding is thin as well. I was initially unimpressed with it the first time I put it on Iaine because I thought it would just leak. And I was right--it happened a couple of times. Also, the garters around the thighs don't stretch very well and the diaper material irritated Iaine's skin. I think it doesn't give enough ventilation. (And what magic tapes? They're nothing but transparent sticky plastic things).

Verdict: I think I discovered why it's relatively cheaper than most brands. I have no plans of using it ever again, except maybe in an emergency case. Like if it happens that Iaine got pee and poop all over herself, I don't have any more nappies in her bag, and EQ Dry is the only brand in the shelves.

Drypers Wee Wee Dry - Someone else also bought them for Iaine. Still using them because there are still a few left in the pack right now. Iaine is using the Medium size.

Look: Boxy. Designed with bold and bright colors. Generally, it looks like a brand for boys. I don't know why, I just get that feeling. LOL

Quality: It leaked once. The padding is thick, but not as absorbent as I thought. One time, Iaine's pee seemed to leak from the back and got to the bed sheets. That was a head shaking moment. I guess the pee didn't sit long enough for the padding to be absorb it. But the fit is good though, and it keeps its form when wet. Sadly, the price is more than its worth.

Verdict: Average. Others are just better.

Prokids - My little sister used this when she was a baby. My mom bought a pack for Iaine. Iaine used the Newborn and Small sizes.

Look: No bold and bright colors. Simple with some colorful details. It looks breezy and sturdy.

Quality: When my sister was a baby, Prokids leaked almost every morning but on Iaine it never did. The fit is good and the garters don't irritate because they stretch well. The padding is thick and what's so special about it is that the designs become more visible when wet, letting mommy know that it's time for a diaper change. Best thing about it is that it never irritated Iaine's skin.

Verdict: I trust this brand next to my favorite one...

Pampers Comfort - Iaine is using it right now, Medium size.

Look: It has green drawings all over it and colored faces of different animals on each diaper.

Quality: Lightweight and breezy. It has tiny holes at the back so baby's skin can breathe. The materials are soooo stretchy which makes the diaper easy to adjust and put on, creating a very snug fit. (Iaine has some Small ones left and I can still make them fit!) Pampers has never leaked so far with Iaine. It gets a little deformed when wet but it never breaks. It's also easy to tell when baby has poop in her nappy because the edges are a little thin so it's easy for you to see poop. It's worth the price.

Verdict: It's my favorite brand as of the moment.

...

I'm still on the lookout for more affordable brands that could be better. Some moms may have different opinions about these nappies but right now Pampers is my champion. It keeps Iaine happy so I'm happy.

Tooth Or No Tooth?

Again, I ask you. Where does the time go?!

There are a few things that I've noticed recently. One is that everyday, the progress of Iaine's eye contact development is getting better. She's more responsive to her surroundings. It amazes me how babies can be so happy over the simplest things even if they've seen it God-knows-how-many times already. Now she's more interested in her musical mobile and loves having conversations with people too. She has mastered how to "coo back" which makes every morning beautiful and happy. Sometimes I ask myself what goodness I have done in my life to deserve such a wonderful child.

Iaine is also "drooling" more than usual. Sometimes I think she spits up her formula but I would be wrong and discover that it's actually saliva that's trailing down from the corner of her mouth. So could this be it?

Could she be teething?!

Wow! Another developmental milestone could be fast approaching!

But isn't it too early for teething? She's barely 3 months old and from what I learned, babies usually start around 4 months. So today I did a little research and I was actually surprised about what I learned. Some babies are actually "born" with teeth!

Anyway, if Iaine really is starting to cut teeth then I'm glad I bought this yesterday:

It's the Bright Starts Chill and Teethe for babies 0 months onwards. They're BPA-free plastic teethers filled with purified water. I chose these over others because they're smaller--makes them easier to grasp and put inside the mouth to be chewed on.

I introduced one to Iaine today after I chilled them in the fridge overnight. Because she still hasn't fully developed hand to mouth coordination, I put a teether in her hand and assisted her in putting it into her mouth. Immediately she sucked and gnawed on it! I got so excited and laughed. And then I thought This is great! She needs to suck on something else other than her hands... Because Iaine has also started thumbsucking.

And I hate thumbsucking. The first time I saw her do it I laughed out loud because it looked so cute and I was so happy that Iaine finally found her hands. But I still hate it.

I've tried giving her pacifiers because I thought they would work (Iaine has more than 1), but she just outgrew them too fast. Aside from her feeding bottles, I guess a teether is the only alternate solution to satisfy her oral-phase needs.

I have a little cousin who's 4 years old and she used to have calluses on her two middle fingers from sucking on them for years. Calluses on my own little Cheeky's hands? No way! Iaine has yet to fully learn how to do this nasty habit, and this is good because it would be easier to keep her from doing it. When she tries to slip one finger in her mouth it just slides back out so she ends up sucking and licking her knuckles and gets spit all over her hand and face. I pull her hand out and immediately wipe off all the drool. Nasty nasty.

And by the way if you wanna hear about head lifting--she has mastered the skill! Pretty soon we don't have to support her head anymore. Ah, she's getting so big.

I'm keeping a close eye on more developmental milestones to come. My husband and I are so excited about all this. Iaine is at this stage where she's growing up in front of our eyes and learning so much already. She never fails to amaze us.

I wanna be with her all the way as she grows up. I just wish things won't happen too fast. I'll miss her when she starts running off to play with her friends and when she's in school all day. But babies grow up into toddlers, toddlers into gradeschoolers, gradeschoolers into teens, teens into college kids... Wait, what am I saying?

I'm not even sure if she's really starting to cut teeth! LMAO

My Healthy 2 Month Old

As mothers, we tend to be watchful of our little ones' growth and developmental milestones. I feel so lucky that my little fairy has always made me proud of her advanced development. I'm not the kind of person who likes to brag but that changes when it comes to Iaine. She's such a healthy happy baby girl.

At her doctor's appointment yesterday, her pediatrician was glad to see that Iaine gained almost a kilo since the last time we came in. Little tigress now weighs a staggering 5.3 kilos! I guess that explains why my arms seem a lot more toned now... aside from all the other mommy duties I do everyday.

Anyway, her doc noticed that Iaine has good eye contact. She was right and I added that Iaine also responds well to conversation. Iaine's doc was happy to hear this. She also saw that Lil Tigress was very well behaved as she was administering some liquid medication orally and told me there are actually a few babies like that who don't freak out during medication time. She also assured me that Iaine's good eye contact confirms she doesn't have any kind of mental retardation such as autism. I felt my heart flutter with pride, happiness, but most of all, relief.

In relation to the eye-contact thing, the doctor also advised me to show Iaine red, black and white patterns as frequently as possible. I've always known this but I never really had the time to do it. So after the appointment, my husband and I drove to the mall with Iaine tagging along and bought materials for our assignment.

As soon as Iaine was asleep and settled last night, I started working on the project. I was so thrilled! Things new to my everyday routine excite me. Jai was too busy to join so he passed and made his paper crane today.

Ladies and gents, I give you... Project RBW!

colored paper, glue, adhesive tape, ball of yarn, styrofoam balls

I think these things are just so cute.

Two Month Old Tigress

My little fairy turned two months old on April 6th and I ask myself where the time goes!

We had a little celebration at my husbands' relatives place. After that, my mom, sisters and a cousin of ours picked us up and we all headed to SM to have another celebration of our own.

We had dinner at Gerry's Grill and did a little shopping after. But before we went home my husband and I tried out some supermarket cart stunts on the parking lot ramps. It was hilarious... But what was more hilarious was the game my sister came up with. That night we had a sleepover at my parents' house and my sister Linlyn and our cousin Avvy decided to do a game of "Bed Mattress Down a Flight of Stairs."

It was such a fun happy day!

The next day my mom and my little sister Zshalia had to fly to Vietnam to be with my dad for three weeks. It's always sad when they have to leave but we're used to it. So it's not that bad.

Anyway, here are some photos taken on Iaine's 2nd month birthday. Enjoy!

I can't believe she's 2 months old. She's grown a lot and she's a lot more responsive to conversation now, too! And based on her recent checkup she's now 5.3 kilos and her pedi said that's very good. She's just a very healthy bouncing baby girl.

9 months in my tummy and 2 months of being blessed with our wonderful Iaine... Forever with her is bliss. =)
